Two of the best striking styles in the world are arguably Wing Chun from the East and Boxing from the West. The concept at the heart of this new club is to infuse the best elements of boxing into the Wing Chun style. In short, its 100% Wing Chun, with an element of Western boxing.
Western boxing's footwork, longer range punches, hooks and uppercuts are a great compliment to Wing Chun's 'short range power'.
Self Defence need not be a domain just for the young, we have no high kicks or throws so training is suitable for any age. Many disabilities and long term injuries can be accommodated. We currently have students 60+
Our focus in our school is on Self Defence and Wellbeing and not 'Sport Combat'. It also can never be just about learning 'how to fight'. Martial Arts should offer so much more and is just as much about your mind as it is your body. So why we understand the need to grow and continue to develop our art, we always maintain the importance of tradition. This is demonstrated in the 3 Wing Chum forms, Sui Lim Tao, Cham Kiu and Biu Tze.
The 'Western Wing Chun' logo is a representation of both these great fighting styles, albeit our main focus is on Wing Chun. The Red Chinese Dragon representing Wing Chun and by the Green Western Dragon representing Boxing.
Supplementary Training - Understanding the need for a well rounded art, optional training includes anti takedown techniques.
Sifu Dean Carrick's interest in martial arts started way back in the 80's whilst growing up in Harlesden, London. During those year he studied various arts, including Wu Shu/Kung Fu (Chen Wu Kwan), Tae Kwon Do, a short spell with Victor Khan's Ving Tsun school, western boxing and then spent four years learning the ‘Epee’ weapon at London's elite Haverstock Fencing school attaining a UK top hundred ranking within the first year. Eventually Dean settled in the highly reputable UK Wing Chun Kung Fu Association under the guidance of his former teacher, Master James Sinclair. Here he remained both as student and instructor for over 10 years. He continues to train and also remains an active student of Western Boxing.
Dean is a registered Instructor with the British Martial Arts and Boxing Association and is Enhanced DBS cleared. His career saw 20 years working with the Metropolitan Police Service's Counter Terrorism Unit and spent several years as a successful Youth Soccer coach in Huntingdonshire. Dean recently worked with Cambridgeshire County Council's Targeted Support Team, working with young people who are NEET (Not in Education, Employment or Training), using Martial Arts as a vehicle to motivate young people.
